Summary
Romans is Paul’s manifesto, his most concentrated and deliberate explanation of the gospel. In chapter 2 Paul pivots from the obvious sins of chapter 1 to a quieter danger: religious self-confidence and arrogance.
He exposes hypocrisy and strips away excuses. God’s judgment is perfectly impartial, which levels the playing field. Each person is judged for what they have done, not for their heritage, their moral claims, or their religious identity.
This clears away false security and prepares us for the explosive good news to come. Only when we see the truth about ourselves can we grasp the depth of God’s grace.
Questions to think about
- Where might I be relying on my background or religious identity instead of God’s mercy?
