1 & 2 Peter: Verse by Verse

Summary

Peter speaks first to wives and husbands. The word for submission, hupotassō, means to arrange oneself under or willingly align with another; in the New Testament it never carries inferiority, coercion or blind obedience. Wives can win their husbands without words through purity and reverence, and true beauty is the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit. Husbands are to live with their wives with understanding and to honor them (timē: to treat as precious), so that nothing hinders their prayers.

Then Peter turns to the whole church: be like-minded, sympathetic, loving, compassionate and humble, and repay evil with blessing. God’s eyes are on the righteous and His ears attentive to their prayer. Even if we suffer for doing right we are blessed, and we should always be ready to give a reason for our hope, with gentleness and respect and a clear conscience.

The chapter ends with Christ, who suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous. The lesson takes the proclamation to the imprisoned spirits in the days of Noah as preaching judgment, not salvation, and sees the floodwaters as a picture of baptism: we are saved by the death and resurrection of Jesus, and the water symbolically washes our sins away.

The shape of the chapter
