Living Stones and Royal Priests
- Passage
- 1 Peter 2
- Taught
- November 23, 2025
Summary
God shapes each rough stone. Peter calls Jesus the living stone rejected by men but chosen and precious to God, and calls believers living stones being built into a spiritual house. The lesson traces the stone theme through Psalm 118:22, Isaiah 28:16 and Isaiah 8:14, and through the Greek words lithos, petra and petros.
Believers are also “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation,” called to proclaim the excellencies of the One who called them out of darkness. The priestly work of the church includes praise and worship, acts of love and service, prayer and intercession, and personal holiness.
The second half of the chapter asks how to live honorably among unbelievers. Peter calls for submission to governing authorities and for servants to respect their masters, even when treated unjustly, and points to Christ, who entrusted Himself to the One who judges justly and bore our sins on the tree. The lesson looks at the Greek hupotassō and at examples where Scripture shows God’s people obeying God rather than men.
How the chapter builds
Peter moves from who we are in Christ to how that identity looks in public life.
- 2:1–10. Crave the Word, come to the living Stone, and become a holy priesthood and a people for God’s own possession.
- 2:11–17. Abstain from the passions that war against the soul and keep your conduct honorable, including toward the government.
- 2:18–25. Endure unjust suffering as Christ did, the Shepherd and Overseer of our souls.
Practical takeaways
The slides draw out these lessons:
- Live honorably among unbelievers so that they see your good works and glorify God (Matthew 5:16).
- Respect authority while prioritizing God’s will (Romans 13:1; Acts 5:29).
- Follow Christ’s example in suffering (Philippians 2:5–7).
Questions to talk about

- Is Christ truly the cornerstone of my life, or am I stumbling over Him?Those who build on the rock stand firm (Matthew 7:24–27).
- How am I proclaiming the excellencies of Him who called me out of darkness? Our good deeds let others see and glorify God (Matthew 5:16).
- Am I resisting the desires that wage war against my soul?Walking by the Spirit is the answer (Galatians 5:16–17).
