Summary
Romans 8:18–39 is one of the richest and most comforting passages in Scripture. Paul addresses suffering head on. Hardship, weakness, and groaning are not signs of God’s absence but part of life in a fallen world while we wait for future glory. Our present pain is understood in light of what God has promised and finished in Christ.
The passage also raises some of the most difficult theological questions in the Bible, especially God’s sovereignty, foreknowledge, and predestination. These verses have been carefully studied and interpreted in different ways throughout church history. The teacher urged the class to go deep rather than stay spiritually superficial, so that they would be anchored in confidence, assurance, and hope.
As in earlier lessons, he presented several major theological views to help members understand the text and ground their convictions in Scripture, while keeping the focus where Paul places it: the unshakeable love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Questions to think about
- How does knowing God’s promises change the way I look at present suffering?
